Advocacy & Research
The Advocacy Working Group's overview is to communicate the value of small practice Architects through the transparency of information, ‘lifting the fog’ around what architects actually do and our relevance today.
We have collaborated with Open House Melbourne on a workshop series ‘The Naked Architect: a guide to commissioning and working with a residential architect’. Seasons 1, 2 and 3 are available to view below. ArchiTeam launched RASP (Research for Architects in Small Practice) to gather crucial research information pertinent to our field in 2018, this first crowdfunded research project was undertaken by The University of Melbourne - Melbourne School of Design by Dr. Peter Raisbeck. The first research question “Do small practice architect designed renovations improve capital gains in the Melbourne residential property market?” This first-ever crowdfunded research was announced in 2020 - That 'Yes! small practice architect designed renovations do improve capital gains in the Melbourne residential property market. The next RASP project is underway as we speak.
The Advocacy group also undertakes other activities, preparing letters of support for the Nightingale model of architect-led housing; as well as submitting a response and Press Release to the Better Apartments Draft Standards, asking Government for extensions to the Homebuilder Scheme, implementing a Post Occupancy Evaluation survey for members use and initiated a special rate for ArchiReam members wanting to be Carbon Neutral through our relationship with Pangolin Associates.
We invite all ArchiTeam members to assist with these grassroots actions to support the architecture community. Each year a core group of max. 6 members are selected each year to work on the advocacy Key Project.
If you would like to add your voice to our Advocacy group please send an expression of interest to advocacy@architeam.net.au

“I’m part of the Advocacy for Architects working group where we are looking at how and what we can do to advocate for architects, whether it be our members or the broader community. It provides a forum for discussion of issues pertinent to our industry that as an individual it’s hard to get traction on, but as a collective, with our members behind us, it could go somewhere bigger.”– Claire Scorpo, Claire Scorpo Architects & ArchiTeam member
“Architecture doesn’t offer great wealth, and, as a small business owner, it doesn’t offer a stress-free life. But it does offer the opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself.”– Warwick Mihaly, Mihaly Slocombe Architects & ArchiTeam Director
