Condensation is one of the most commonly misunderstood causes of building envelope failure and is frequently mistaken for roof or wall leakage. This presentation explores the science of condensation and examines how ventilation, insulation, vapour management and system design influence moisture performance in metal roofing and cladding applications.
Through practical examples and NCC references, participants will gain a deeper understanding of condensation risk, roof and wall ventilation strategies, climate considerations, and the importance of coordinated building envelope design. The session is intended to assist architects and designers in developing more robust, durable and compliant roofing and walling solutions.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Understand the principles of condensation formation within building envelopes, including the relationship between temperature, humidity, dew point, and moisture movement.
- Identify common causes and symptoms of condensation failure in metal roofing and walling systems, including the impact of thermal bridging, inadequate ventilation, and vapour accumulation.
- Recognise the requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) relating to condensation management, roof space ventilation, and moisture control in roof and wall assemblies.
- Evaluate the role of ventilation in condensation risk management, including roof cavity ventilation, wall cavity ventilation, stack effect, and air flow pathways.
- Understand the interaction between insulation, vapour control layers, and metal building materials, and how incorrect specification or installation can contribute to moisture-related failures.

- Apply practical design principles for reducing condensation risk in residential, commercial, and architectural roofing and walling applications through effective detailing and system coordination.
- Recognise design responsibilities and coordination requirements between architects, builders, manufacturers, and other project stakeholders when managing condensation risk within the building envelope.
