As one of our newest partners for 2025 we asked Island Block and Paving National Sales Manager/Director - Jackson Thurlow, 5 Questions to find out a little more about them.
1. Who are you?
We’re Island Block & Paving, committed to innovation and sustainability , we are Australia’s first and only manufacturer of a complete range of Carbon Neutral certified bricks, building blocks, pavers and retaining wall systems. Suitable for high end residential and commercial construction. Island Block & Paving is Quality Assured to ISO 9002 a family-owned business employing 45 staff, we distribute across Victoria, Tasmania, ACT, NSW and SA . Established in 1993 our slogan is “No one knows Bricks, Block & Pavers better.
2. What do you do?
We combine innovation, performance and sustainability to create masonry products that are beautiful, durable and better for the planet. We offer a complete selection of Bricks, Brick Slips, Bespoke Long Bricks, Blocks, Retaining Walls and Paving products that are all CarbonRATE™ Carbon Neutral certified and Global GreenTag Level A accredited with annual third party audits.
We’re driven by a simple goal; to provide architects, builders and homeowners with environmentally responsible building products that never compromise on design or quality.
3. What has been the most scary/courageous thing you've ever done?
In 1993 we mortgaged our collective family assets, borrowed a large amount of money, purchased a 40,000m2 parcel of vacant land , built a factory and office building and started the Island Block & Paving business from scratch. With Adbri Masonry 15kms in one direction and Austral Masonry 15kms in the other, we successfully squeezed ourselves into the market against the multi nationals. We survived a price war and over the ensuing years built our business to become Australia’s leading independent manufacturer with a focus on innovation and sustainability. It required significant investment, innovation and a complete rethink of traditional manufacturing. From capturing onsite rainwater and using solar power to introducing recycled glass sand and cement replacements. Taking that leap wasn’t easy, but it’s redefined what’s possible for sustainable construction in Australia.
4. Who do you admire and why?
We admire forward-thinking architects, designers and builders who embrace sustainable materials and challenge conventional methods. Their creativity and commitment to responsible design inspire us to keep innovating - proving that environmental responsibility and architectural excellence can, and should, go hand in hand.
5. What is it about ArchiTeam that made you want to get involved?
ArchiTeam represents a passionate network of architects striving to grow their businesses, who share our values of innovation, collaboration and sustainability. We wanted to connect with like-minded professionals who see materials not just as building blocks, but as opportunities to make lasting, positive change. Being part of ArchiTeam allows us to support, learn from, and collaborate with those shaping the future of Australian architecture.
